Gigs, giggles and guitar heroes all in the mix at Urban Detox
Three of Manchester's up-and-coming bands as well as top comedians are joining forces with young people from across the city for a multimedia spectacular to promote better mental health.
El Policia, Whipcord and The Bottomfeeders will all be appearing at Urban Detox, a free one-day event at Urbis in Manchester on March 7th. The live performances will crown an afternoon of free creative workshops, comedy and video gaming competitions, aimed at helping 14 to 25 year olds find ways of having fun while maintaining positive mental health within the pressures of urban living.
Free activities on offer during the day-time session, which begins at 1pm include: circus skills, a laughter workshop and taster sessions in photography and creative writing. There will also be a video gaming competitions, in which young people can try out their skills on Nintendo Wii Sports and Guitar Heroes. Two Nintendo Wii consoles are also up for grabs in a free prize draw.
As well as live sets by the three bands, the evening gig, which runs from 6.15 to 8.55pm, will feature comedians from the Big Comedy Store, performing material challenging some of the stigmas associated with mental health problems. The event will also showcase a film made by young people to document their experiences of mental health.
Natalie Sharp, lead singer with The Bottomfeeders, has spoken about her own experience of mental health problems in the documentary.
She said: "This whole event is about helping young people to find an outlet. It's alright to talk about what's going on in your head. Mental health shouldn't have a stigma attached to it. There's nothing to be scared of and there's plenty of help out there."
The event has been organised by a number of local services who will be there on the day to give advice and tips on maintaining health and well-being as well as information about the services that are available.
Kieran Fahy, Head of Manchester Early Intervention service, one of the event partners, said: "The sooner people get help, the sooner they can get on with their lives. This event is about helping young people to help themselves and getting appropriate professional help if they need it."
Michelle Ashworth, Mental Health and Wellbeing Specialist with NHS Manchester added: "Urban Detox is designed to equip young people with tools for urban survival, giving them access to a range of activities and strategies to improve mental health and to challenge stigma. The event provides a solid basis for organisations to come together to inspire, motivate and challenge young people."
